Peggy Bird - "Hapan"

Peggy was a third generation artist who carved pipestone for over twenty five years. Her name was Hapan, which translates to mean Second-born female child. She learned much of her craft from her mother, Aileen Bird. Her grandfather was Moses Crow, who settled in the Pipestone area around 1927 to work the pipestone quarries and carve the pipestone rock. Her specialties included carved pipestone turtles and owls.

Peggy was an enrolled member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Nation. She passed away and journeyed to the Spirit World in October 2009.
